Some pictures from the Victorian era are funny and odd, but in their defence, photography was still something new.
Before you could burst-shot seven selfies per second with your mobile phone, photography was a very expensive pleasure. Back in the Victorian era, the cost of pictures meant that you’d only have your photo taken once or twice in a lifetime.
Victorian pictures weren’t as instant as they are today and some had to hold poses for several hours, which explains why some people in the photos look basically uncomfortable.
Photography then wasn’t as casual as it is now and getting yourself photographed was a big deal. As a result, you won’t find too many photos of Victorians actually enjoying themselves in front of a camera.
There are many ideas why Victorians always look so grim in pictures. Long exposure times made smiling difficult, and the astronomical cost of portraits gave people very little to smile about.
People were also reluctant to show their teeth because dental hygiene in those days was almost non-existent. Despite all the obstacles, in some of their photos, their humour is indisputable.
